faq'sMS Serenissima: The "Grand Old Lady" of the Northern Seas
Classic Nautical Elegance Meets Expedition Spirit
If you believe that the journey is just as important as the destination, the MS Serenissima will capture your heart. This is not a "resort at sea" with neon lights and thousands of passengers; rather, she is a "Grand Old Lady" - a rare survivor of a golden era of shipbuilding, offering a boutique experience that feels more like a private members' club or a cozy country house hotel than a cruise ship.
Born as the Harald Jarl, she spent her early years navigating the rugged Norwegian fjords. After a series of meticulous renovations - most recently a thorough upgrading that infused her vintage soul with Swedish "country house" charm and sleek Art Deco touches - she emerged as the MS Serenissima. Today, she is one of the few vessels of her generation still cruising, a testament to the love and investment poured into her maintenance and safety.
Dining on the MS Serenissima is a social and panoramic affair. The Venice Restaurant features large picture windows, ensuring you never miss a passing whale or ice floe while you dine.
The MS Serenissima is built for adventure. Her small size allows her to slip into remote Svalbard bays and tiny ports that the "giants" simply cannot reach. Equipped with a fleet of Zodiacs, she is ready to whisk you away for shore landings and close-up encounters with the Arctic wilderness.
On board, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. You are invited to visit the Bridge to chat with the Officers about our charts and progress, and - a rare treat for maritime enthusiasts - we often offer tours of her unique, heritage engine room.
If you crave non-stop theatrical entertainment, 24-hour mega-buffets, and "people management," this is not the vessel for you. But if you value peace at sea, time spent with like-minded travelers, and a professional crew that knows your name, you have found your ideal home in the Arctic.

What are the cancellation terms for this expedition cruise?
Vegan Travel is fully bonded and insured, and our standard terms for small-ship cruises apply to this charter. We aim for complete transparency, so please reach out to our team if you require further clarification on our policies.
More details: OUR T&Cs
What makes this cruise uniquely vegan?
This journey aboard the exclusively chartered MS Serenissima is 100% vegan. Every meal, snack, and beverage served is entirely plant-based. We collaborate intimately with the ship’s culinary masters to craft a menu that celebrates the artistry, flavor, and sustainability of gourmet vegan cuisine. Furthermore, all onboard essentials - from the luxury toiletries in your cabin to the cleaning supplies used throughout the vessel - are strictly cruelty-free and vegan-friendly.
Is this cruise suitable for non-vegans?
Absolutely! While our core philosophy is rooted in vegan values, we extend a warm welcome to everyone. Non-vegans are frequently astonished by the sophistication and richness of our plant-based gastronomy. It is a fantastic opportunity to discover the vegan lifestyle in a fun, relaxed, and high-end setting - you won’t miss a single thing!
Are vegan wines and premium beverages available?
Indeed! Our curated beverage selection features a wide array of fine vegan wines, artisanal beers, and creative cocktails, all free from animal-derived fining agents. To enhance your dining experience, a selection of wines and beverages is already included with your dinner. Our knowledgeable staff is always on hand to suggest the perfect pairing for your meal.
Can you accommodate specific dietary requirements?
Yes, we pride ourselves on our inclusive kitchen. Whether you require gluten-free, soy-free, or nut-free options, our culinary team is equipped to meet your needs. We simply ask that you inform us of your specific requirements at the time of booking so we can ensure every meal is perfectly tailored to you.
Are there places in Longyearbyen where vegans can eat?
Yes, all restaurants and cafés in Longyearbyen can offer vegan alternatives to their guests. We recommend letting them know in advance or asking when you reserve your table.
What is the MS Serenissima like, and what can I expect?
The MS Serenissima is a boutique, intimate vessel designed for those who prefer a personalized and exclusive expedition experience. The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly, and private. You can unwind in the elegant indoor lounge, enjoy the views from the spacious open decks, enjoy the hot tub or find a quiet corner in the library with a book.
How many passengers will be on board?
To maintain a cozy and elite atmosphere, the MS Serenissima accommodates 99 passengers. This small group size ensures highly personalized service and fosters a genuine sense of community among like-minded travelers.
Does the MS Serenissima have stabilizers?
Yes, state-of-the-art stabilizers have been installed aboard the MS Serenissima, allowing for much smoother sailing even if the waves are higher.
Will I have internet access during the voyage?
Yes, Starlink Wi-Fi access is offered. While we encourage you to embrace the beauty of the Arctic and "unplug," we understand the need to stay connected. Please note that connectivity may vary depending on the ship’s location and satellite reception in remote polar regions.
Internet vouchers can be purchased at the reception.
What is the dress code?
The dress code on board is "relaxed." During the day, functional and warm clothing is essential for expeditions. In the evenings, we recommend smart casual or simply casual attire for dinner. There is no requirement for formal wear; our focus is entirely on your comfort and enjoyment.
Are there dedicated single cabins?
Yes! Unlike many smaller vessels, the MS Serenissima features 7 dedicated single cabins. For solo travelers who prefer other cabin grades, we also offer a "Cabin Share" program to match you with a same-sex roommate, or you may book a twin/double room for single use (subject to availability and a supplement).
Is the ship accessible for guests with mobility challenges?
The MS Serenissima is a classic vessel with some structural limitations, but it does feature a small elevator on board and one accessible cabin. However, due to the nature of Arctic landings via Zodiacs and some steep stairs, we kindly ask that you contact us before booking to discuss your specific mobility needs.
How should I dress for the Arctic cold?
The average temperature during the summer months (May to September) is 3-7 °C. You will need a windproof jacket and pants, warm thermal underwear, mittens, a scarf, and a hat. Because snow and ice melting increase water levels in summer, you will need rubber boots or sturdy mountain boots and gaiters if you plan to go on a hike or cross streams.
What should I pack?
In addition to the cold-weather gear mentioned above, bring comfortable indoor clothing for time spent on the ship. We provide high-quality vegan toiletries on board, but you are welcome to bring your own favorites. Don't forget high-quality sunglasses and sunscreen, as the Arctic sun can be very strong when reflecting off snow and ice.
What happens in the event of inclement weather?
Your safety and comfort are our absolute priorities. Should weather conditions affect the planned route, our experienced Captain and the Expedition Team will adjust the itinerary to ensure a safe and rewarding journey. This may involve visiting alternative bays or protected harbors.
How does the cruise address environmental sustainability?
Sustainability is a cornerstone of the Vegan Travel mission. We adhere to rigorous eco-friendly practices, including waste-minimization protocols and strict adherence to AECO guidelines for Arctic travel to ensure our presence has a minimal footprint on this pristine wilderness.
How do I get from Longyearbyen to Svalbard Airport?
There will be a dedicated airport shuttle provided on disembarkation day. While there are regular scheduled flights, Vegan Travel is also considering the option of a charter flight to Oslo or Copenhagen. Details will follow.
Where can I walk on my own in Longyearbyen safely?
You can walk freely within the town limits of Longyearbyen. Do not pass the polar bear warning signs situated at the Port (west), the Wilderness Center (east), and Nybyen/Huset (south) without a guide or polar bear protection. A popular safe walk is the 8 km town circuit passing iconic local buildings.
What sort of animals can I see in Svalbard?
Svalbard is home to indigenous Svalbard reindeer, Arctic foxes, and the iconic polar bear. In the sea, you may spot various species of seals, walruses, and whales. Bird life is plentiful, including the Svalbard rock ptarmigan, the only bird that stays year-round.
When can you experience the Midnight Sun?
In Svalbard, you can experience the Midnight Sun from April 20 to August 23. During our May expeditions, you will enjoy 24 hours of daylight!
